Tuxedo to offer scholarships to Baker applicants

  • The Tuxedo school district will use a $450,000 grant from a local foundation to offer scholarships to out-of-district students who may want to attend George F. Baker High School.

The scholarships will range from $4,000 to $6,000 and cover a portion of the $13,745 annual tuition, according to a statement from the Rockland Community Foundation, which is handling the funds for the school district. Applications, available on the Baker High School website, www.tuxedoufsd.org, are due July 6.

The number of scholarships is contingent on the application pool and the availability of funds, the Rockland Community Foundation said in a statement.

Baker High School has a capacity for 400 students but the enrollment for the next school year is expected to be about 80. The current enrollment of 320 fell dramatically after the Greenwood Lake School District ended its three-decade-long contract to send its high schoolers to Tuxedo over tuition and other disputes.

That led to a loss of 200-plus students and a $2.5 million budget hole, leading to a debate whether the high school should be closed. The district decided to keep Baker open, but must also deal with the low enrollment.

The district hopes to attract non-resident students who might view its small class size an advantage.

"We have the ability to include tuition students while maintaining our intimate class size and individualized attention, and we welcome them," schools Superintendent Carol Lomascolo said in the statement.

The money was donated by long-time Tuxedo Park residents Chris and Sally Sonne's Vincent Mulford Foundation. It donated another $150,000 to help purchase technology hand-held devices for K through 12 students.

"Small schools can be at such a disadvantage and yet they offer such opportunities for greatness," said Sally Sonne in the statement. "We hope this will help make a difference."

FORD FOUNDATION PARTNERS AFRIFF ON SCHOLARSHIP

AFRIFF ON SCHOLARSHIP FORD FOUNDATION PARTNERS AFRIFF ON SCHOLARSHIP June 28, 2015 Written by Our Reporter

AS a prelimnary to its Talent Campus initiative, the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) is already exploring avenues to enrich talents through scholarships to some of the top film schools abroad.

Last Saturday, as the rain poured in Lagos, it was showers of joy for 15 young film students selected by AFRIFF for a Ford Foundation scholarship to the Montana State University in the United States of America.

At a media parley where the recipients were unveiled, and subsequently send-forth amidst merriment, Prof. Paul Nwulu, Ford Foundation's Program Officer for Advancing Public Service Media (West Africa) explained his organisation's vision and support for creative talent and how AFRIFF fit into their aspiration as a worthy partner.

Tagged 'AFRIFF Talent Development Workshops', the initiative provides beginner and intermediate courses for young people.

The recipients were selected as the best in their chosen fields of training at the 2014 AFRIFF's Talent Development Workshops. They include 12 Nigerians, two Kenyans and one Ethiopian.

"This Scholarship scheme is a one month intensive hands-on training camp on various aspects of filmmaking with an emphasis on documentary film making," said Prof. Nwulu.

"There will be six days each week of classes which will include intensive field work and hands-on training. A trip to Hollywood in Los Angeles will crown this trip with interactions billed to happen with American film makers and a tour of certain film studios slated to take place as well."

For Founder/CEO of AFRIFF, Ms Chioma Ude, the scholarship is one in a series of other talent development initiatives of the five-year-old festival. She noted that the skill acquisition and youth development initiative was designed to use filmmaking as an authentic vehicle for youth empowerment.

She said: "We believe we can use this model for a social revolution that will change the economic horizon of the African film industry, by providing technical knowledge and skill sets to the abundant talents in our film community."

It will be recalled that AFRIFF has since its first edition in 2010, provided free training and talent development opportunities for young people and aspiring filmmakers. They have provided cutting edge education in Sound for Film, Cinematography and Screen Writing for over 500 students, in partnership with Sound & Motion Technical College and City Varsity, Cape Town, South Africa. They have also worked directly with students of the National Film Institute, Jos; PEFTI Film Institute, Lagos; the Creative Arts Department of the University of Port-Harcourt; Department of Media & Theatre Arts at the University of Calabar and the Theatre Arts Department of the University of Uyo. The Desicon Group was the 2014 sponsor of the AFRIFF Talent Development Workshops.

AFRIFF also organises master classes for more established filmmakers and professionals in the industry.

Ude noted that this training in the US is in line with the vision of providing growth opportunities for graduates of the festival's training program.

Some of the recipients who left Nigeria at the weekend include, Anuel Modebe, Oluwabori Ijimakinde, Adeolu Adeniyi, Oto-bong Ekpenyong, Hausa Allahbura, Eloho Okumo, Adelarin Awotedu, Uribe Udoekpo, Sophie Okezie-Ajaero, Sharon Emmanuel, and Chukwuma Ekine.

Others are; One Nigerian, two Kenyans and one Ethiopian, who are expected to join the group through separate flight arrangements.

Peden Provides Scholarship Assistance in Local Government Law

When James A. "Jeep" Peden, Jr. decided to give back to his alma mater, the University of Mississippi School of Law, providing scholarship assistance seemed to be the right choice.

Peden, a member of the Law School Class of 1970, recently established the Stennett, Wilkinson & Peden Scholarship at the School of Law to honor his Jackson law firm. The scholarship will provide a stipend each year to both a second-year and a third-year student. Each recipient will be selected by the dean and faculty of the School of Law on the basis of academic achievement, leadership, interest in local government law and need.

The recipient of several prestigious scholarships himself, Peden said he recognizes the value of educational funding.

"I was very fortunate to receive a number of scholarships which paid for my higher education," he said. "I always felt a debt to those who gave me that scholarship money. I want to help other students do what I had the opportunity to do."

    James A.

James A. "Jeep" Peden, Jr.Courtesy of UM School of Law

Peden began his collegiate career as a holder of a prestigious Carrier Scholarship at Ole Miss. He was first in his class, graduating in 1966, and received a Fulbright Scholarship to study British government and politics at the University of Bristol in England in 1966-67.

He then went on to accept a Ford Foundation Law Fellowship in 1967 upon entering the UM School of Law.

"I was torn between applying to law school or getting a doctorate in history or political science," Peden said. "Receiving the Fulbright gave me post graduate experience outside the state, so I knew I wanted to come back to Ole Miss."

While in law school, Peden served on the editorial board of the Mississippi Law Journal. Upon his 1970 graduation,he joined the firm now known as Stennett, Wilkinson & Peden and served on the staff of then-Lt. Gov. William Winter, who later was elected as Mississippi's governor.

Peden's law firm has a long connection with local government law as well as with zoning and land use issues.

"The late E.W. Stennett, a 1927 graduate of the law school, and Gene Wilkinson, currently a senior member of the firm, both served long terms under mayors in Jackson — Stennett as city attorney for more than twenty years and Wilkinson as chairman of the Civil Service Commission for more than three decades," he said.

Peden himself began very early in his career working on zoning, land use and local government law issues, and developed a specialty in these areas. He has appeared before the Mississippi Supreme Court in 16 zoning appeals.

This experience, coupled with others gained in law school, inspired some of the characteristics Peden desires in scholarship recipients, who must be an outstanding in the areas of zoning, land use and local government law.

"My local government law professor was Robert Khayat," Peden said. "I was in the first class he taught, a municipal law class when I was a second year law student. He helped spur an interest in local government law.

"I've never seen a college administrator or faculty member who related so well to people," the alumnus said.

Aside from his work at his firm, Peden has been active in the Mississippi Bar, serving as president of the Young Lawyers Division, president of the Fellows of the Young Lawyers of the Mississippi Bar, chairman of the Mississippi Law Institute, bar commissioner for the Seventh Circuit Court District and charter member of the Governor's Judicial Nominating Committee.

In addition to his illustrious legal career, Peden devoted more than 30 years of his life to the Mississippi Air National Guard, serving as staff judge advocate at the 172nd Airlift Wing in Jackson for 14 years and then as staff judge advocate at Air National Guard state headquarters for 11 years before retiring in 1999. Upon retirement, he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General. He is a graduate of the Air War College.

Peden has been listed for many years in Best Lawyers in America in the specialties of Land Use and Zoning Law. Since 2009, he has served as an adjunct professor at the Mississippi College School of Law, where he teaches the course on Land Use Controls.

To contribute to the endowment for the Stennett, Wilkinson & Peden Scholarship at the University of Mississippi School of Law, individuals and organization can mail a check made payable to the University of Mississippi Foundation with the fund noted in the memo line to the UM Foundation, 406 University Avenue, Oxford, MS 38655. Online gifts can be made at: UM Foundation

Endowed Scholarship Established to Honor Beasley

BOONE, N.C. — In honor of retiring deputy athletics director Rick Beasley's service to his alma mater, Appalachian State University athletics has established the Rick Beasley Wide Receiver Scholarship Endowment. The endowment will provide a scholarship each year to a wide receiver in Appalachian State's football program.

"Providing scholarships for Appalachian State student-athletes has been my passion for the last nine years so it's an unbelievable honor to have a scholarship for Mountaineer wide receivers endowed in my name," Beasley said. "I'm very appreciative to the University and the athletics department for the recognition and for giving me the opportunity to give back to my alma mater for all these years. As always, I thank our alumni and friends for all that they have done for me personally and, more importantly, for our student-athletes."

An All-America wide receiver at Appalachian State from 1977-80, Beasley set seven school records during his playing career and remains the program's all-time leader in yards per reception (17.6) and 100-yard games (16) in a career. In addition to being named a second-team Associated Press All-American in 1979, he was also the Southern Conference Male Athlete of the Year in 1979-80, a three-time all-conference performer and an academic all-conference honoree.

Beasley returned to his alma mater in 2006 as a senior associate athletics director and was promoted to deputy athletics director in 2014. In his role, he served as the athletics department's chief development officer and was heavily involved in the department's day-to-day operations.

Appalachian athletics enjoyed unprecedented fundraising success under Beasley's leadership. After never topping $700,000 in donations in any full year prior to his arrival, the Yosef Club (Appalachian State athletics' fundraising arm) has raised at least $1 million in each of Beasley's nine full years at the University and sur passed the $3 million mark in 2013 and 2014. He has also overseen the solicitation of donations for naming rights and premium seating that has funded much of the University's $50 million in athletics facility enhancements since his arrival.

Beasley served as interim director of athletics from August 15, 2014 until the arrival of current A.D. Doug Gillin on April 6. He will retire from the University on June 30.

"This is a very deserving honor for Rick," Appalachian State football head coach Scott Satterfield said. "What he has done for our program as a student-athlete, alumnus and administrator is immeasurable. I can't think of a more appropriate recognition of Rick's contributions to Appalachian State than for a student-athlete scholarship to be endowed in his name."

In celebration of Beasley's service to Appalachian State, fans are invited to contribute to the Rick Beasley Wide Receiver Scholarship Endowment. A direct link to the online giving pag e and instructions are available at the bottom of the page. As the Yosef Club rapidly approaches achieving its $3 million goal for the 2015 fiscal year, all donations made to the Rick Beasley Wide Receiver Scholarship Endowment and/or the Yosef Club by Tuesday, June 30 will count towards that goal.

To speak with a Yosef Club representative and/or to contribute by phone, call the Yosef Club office at (828) 262-3108. Additionally, inquiries can also be emailed to the Yosef Club office at yosefclub@appstate.edu.

Point received almost 2,000 applications for scholarships during the application period from November 2014 through January 2015. As Point Scholars, students agree to maintain a high level of academic performance and give back to the LGBTQ community through the completion of an individual community service project each year. The scholars also benefit from internship opportunities arranged by Point related to their fields of study. After graduating, Point Scholars become part of the organization's growing alumni network, connecting them with caring individuals and professional contacts throughout the nation.

    Avail scholarships under one portal

MYSURU: Availing scholarships has never been so easy for minority students. A national scholarship portal launched by the government has facilitated a single window system wherein students can get all information about scholarships provided by various boards and departments and use a single integrated application to avail the benefit.

A workshop was organized in Mysuru on Wednesday to create awareness among students about the portal. After inaugurating the workshop, Akram Pasha, director of minority welfare directorate, said that minority students — Muslims, Christians, Jains, Bhuddists, Sikhs and Parsis -- are eligible for pre-metric scholarship scheme of the directorate of minorities. Earlier, scholarships were given by the social welfare department, tribal welfare boards, minority boards and the wakf board, but now all these applications can be processed on the same portal. The portal ensures transparency and directly connects the beneficiaries and the directorate. The scholar ship amount is directly credited to the student's account. The directorate will provide scholarships amounting to Rs 12 lakh to students online this year. This is a central government initiative aimed at encouraging and supporting minority students to continue college education. Especially Muslim students tend to discontinue education due to financial problems, Akram Pasha noted.

Officials of the education department and minority welfare department under the Mysuru revenue division attended the one-day workshop at Kalamandira.
