The St. Bernard Parish Kiwanis Club Scholarship is among the scholarships being offered at Nunez Community College in Chlamette for the fall 2015 semester.
"It is with great pleasure that the 34th Judicial District Court has been able to partner with the St. Bernard - Arabi Kiwanis Club and Nunez Community College to establish this scholarship for deserving students," said Judge Bob Buckley who helped to established the scholarship.
The Kiwanis scholarship was first awarded in spring 2015. Ladd Mahler of Chalmette was the first recipient of the $1,500 award. After two years of study at Nunez, Mahler is transferring to Louisiana State University's main campus in Baton Rouge this fall to study engineering.
"The scholarship helped tremendously," Mahler said."Between my TOPS award and the Kiwanis scholarship, I have been able to get a great education at Nunez and save money to get ready to move to LSU."
The St. Bernard Parish Kiwanis Club Scholarship to be awarded for the 2015-2016 academic year will be a $3,000 award made to one first-time, full-time freshman student attending Nunez Community College. The club will award $1,500 will be awarded in each semester, fall and spring. The scholarship will be awarded to a St. Bernard Parish resident who is active in the community.
"What is exciting about this particular scholarship is that it rewards civic engagement," said Becky Maillet, dean of Student Affairs. "It is wonderful to be able to reward a student who has demonstrated a commitment to making St. Bernard a stronger community," she continued. Eligible students can apply for the Kiwanis scholarship online. Applications will be accepted until August 1.
