More students to benefit from President’s scholarship

Over 50 brilliant but needy students from selected basic schools in the Eastern Region are to benefit from the Presidential Award this year.

The award, initiated in 2011, is organized annually to help support brilliant but needy students in the region to finance their education at the secondary level.

Mr. Williams Gyawu-Darko, the Eastern Regional Coordinator for Basic Schools, in an interview with Ghana News Agency, said the scholarship is given to students that gain admissions to second cycle institutions but do not have the means to pay their fees due to poverty.

He said the Ghana Education Service (GES) in collaboration with the Presidency Award Committee conduct examinations and interviews for selected students who have been chosen for the award.

He said students that go through the processes are given laptops and citations to motivate and to serve as evidence to ensure their full participation as well.

Mr. Gyawu-Darko urged students in basic schools to learn hard to be able to benefit from the award.

The Stage Scholarships 2016: Sylvia Young Theatre School

Visit any show in the West End that features young performers aged between 10 and 16 years old, and it is extremely likely that a number of them will be attending the Sylvia Young Theatre School. Several students have recently enjoyed lead roles in Matilda the Musical, The Lion King, Billy Elliot, The Railway Children and Bugsy Malone, and that's without mentioning all the roles in TV, radio and film.

Sylvia Young's devotion to the nurturing and training of young talent since the school was founded in 1972 has also been reflected in her commitment to The Stage Scholarships scheme. Over the space of 24 years, Young and her team have helped more than 70 children to pursue a career in the performing arts.

On offer this year is one full scholarship (worth up to £60,000) and the chance to join an unrivalled roll call of former students who have gone on to success in all areas of the performing arts. These artists include Denise Van Outen, Keeley Hawes, Preeya Kalidas, Jenna Russell, Rita Ora, Nicholas Hoult and members of such bands as Busted, McFly, the Wanted and the Saturdays. Not to mention what seems like half the cast of EastEnders, past and present.

Joining that community is last year's scholarship winner Ella Tweed, who will now attend SYTS full-time for five years, and with no worries about fees. The 12-year-old from Northampton already has a number of West End credits to her name (including roles in Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and has also appeared in Game of Thrones. She said: "I'm absolutely ecstatic. This is life-changing – it's amazing to be part of the school and be welcomed by so many people who like doing the same things I do."

SYTS offers an academic and vocational curriculum up to the age of 16. The current premises are located in a five-floor, converted church in central London (not far from Marble Arch underground station).

Young takes pride in the school's first-class teaching and the way in which the staff members ensure pupils' feet stay on the ground, whatever roles they may be playing in theatre, film and TV. This is achieved by encouraging a commitment to hard work and SYTS' weekly schedule of three days of academic work and two days of vocational training.

This intensive timetable is balanced with a happy and caring environment. Young comments: "I think we really care about the kids and give them as much support as we can. And it's not all about our financial commitment, it's everything about their time with us, right from the beginning when some of the children are away from home for the first time."

So what is it that Young is looking for in possible scholarship winners?

"First of all, we are seeking potential, and then an ability to sing, dance or act. But it's important that those applying know that they don't have to be fully trained already. It's more about natural talent that, as a school, we can support."

South African mayor awards scholarships to virgin women

JOHANNESBURG (AP) - A South African mayor has awarded college scholarships to 16 young women for remaining virgins to encourage others to be "pure and focus on school," her spokesman said Sunday.

The scholarship was introduced this year and has been awarded to young women from the Uthukela district in the eastern KwaZulu-Natal province, mayoral spokesman Jabulani Mkhonza said. Each year the mayor's office awards scholarships to more than 100 promising high school and university students from the area, he said.

The young women who applied for the scholarships voluntarily stayed virgins and agreed to have regular virginity tests to keep their funding, Uthukela Mayor Dudu Mazibuko told South African talk radio station 702.

"To us, it's just to say thank you for keeping yourself and you can still keep yourself for the next three years until you get your degree or certificate," Mazibuko said.

The grants will be renewed "as long as the child can produce a certificate that she is still a virgin," she said. The scholarships focus on young women because they are more vulnerable to exploitation, teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, she said.

"I think the intentions of the mayor are great but what we don't agree with is giving bursaries for virginity," said chairman for the Commission for Gender Equality Mfanozelwe Shozi. "There is an issue around discrimination on the basis of pregnancy, virginity and even against boys. This is going too far."

Virginity testing is not against South Africa's constitution but it is essential that it is done with consent, said Shozi.

Some activists have called for the banning of virginity testing in South Africa, describing it as sexist and invasive. Those defending the cultural practice say it preserves tradition and has been modernized to teach girls about their reproductive health and HIV and AIDS.

Four Ryle seniors win gaming scholarships

Based on their video game accomplishments, these four Ryle High School seniors were offered full scholarships to Robert Morris University in Chicago. From left are: Henry Kneale, Mason Carnes, Kyle Cousin and Jake Laumann.(Photo: Nancy Daly/The Community Recorder)Buy Photo

UNION – Four seniors at Ryle High School have won full scholarship offers at the first college in the country to provide athletic-based scholarships for e-sports gaming.

Based on their competitive performance in the global online gaming world, Mason Carnes, Kyle Cousin, Henry Kneale and Jake Laumann have received scholarship offers from Robert Morris University in Chicago.

Two of the students, Mason and Henry, started gaming together while students at Ockerman Middle School. The four have played together since freshmen at Ryle with a special emphasis on the game Counter-strike: Global Offensive.

Jake, 18, a Union resident, learned about the e-sports program at Robert Morris and reached out for more information. "This is the part where it got awesome," Jake said, because RMU was already seeking to step up its efforts in Counter-strike competition.

Kurt Melcher, RMU's associate athletic director and e-sports coordinator, said after the Ryle students visited the Chicago campus they were offered full scholarships valued at $22,000 apiece. They'll compete in the 300-school Collegiate Star League on weekends in the school's eSports Arena which has 35 play areas and plays to a full house every Saturday. Then they'll take a full load of classes in whatever area of study interests them.

"It's not just that they're coming to play video games. Their job is to get better as a player and the coach is going to push them," Melcher said.

"It's not just fun and games," Melcher said. "They are at an ability level where they want to be pushed."

From their research, the senior scholarship winners say the e-sports business is on the verge of blowing up in a big way. Online streaming and television interest in professional tournaments is stepping up. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is part of a team that has invested $7 million in a Seattle start-up Unikrn (pronounced "Unicorn"), which offers wagering on competitive video game tournaments, according to Fortune.com.

"Most people see games and they think of people sitting on a couch with a controller just kind of lazing around," said Kyle, 17, of Florence. There is so much more to it, the teens agree.

Melcher, who proposed bringing e-sports into RMU's sports department, said, "They're absolutely a sport. They provide all the same benefits that sports provide," he said. Competitors work as a team, take leadership positions and directions from a coach, rise in skill level. Values of integrity and character, he said, "it all plays in these sports."

The one thing that separates e-sports from traditional collegiate sports, he said, is cardiovascular exertion.

A student at Robert Morris University practices in the college's ESports Arena. (Photo: Thanks to Kurt Melcher)

In 2014 RMU became the first university to offer gaming scholarships for a varsity e-sports team which currently competes in League of Legends, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft and Dota 2 competitions.

And that brings us to the Ryle team's game of choice, Counter-strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO), which had more than 10 million online players last month, according to http://blog.counter-strike.net.

"The game we play, CS: GO, is very skill based," Kyle said. "You have to play it a lot and you really have to practice in order to be good or at least at the level that we are."

Jake, who plans to study business management, has decided to accept the RMU scholarship. Henry, 17, of Florence, says he is 95 percent sure. He's interested in computer science and business. Mason, 18, of Florence, is also nearing a decision and wants to study computers and business. Kyle is still undecided.

Ryle Principal Matt Turner was eager to hear details of the Robert Morris scholarship offer.

"I'm excited and happy for them because they're going to get something they love to do and they're going to get paid for it, basically," Turner said.

    Gamers' snacks of choice

What fuels the scholarship-winning online game players in those high-stress sessions of Counter-strike: Global Offensive? The Recorder asked the Ryle team for the "brain food" that helped get them their full tuition offers.

    Jake: Better Cheddar

    Kyle: Pistachios or unsalted peanuts

    Mason: Sparkling grape juice

Henry: "I'll eat like whatever, but if I'm having a good time I'm drinking Sunkist."

Community Choice Credit Union is seeking applicants for its annual scholarship program, which is awarded to graduating students who pledge to attend college and build careers within Michigan.

The annual scholarship program awards $100,000 in scholarships to students and is now in its eighth year.

The program is one of the largest scholarship programs in the credit union industry both in Michigan and nationally, and has awarded more than $700,000 in scholarships to 140 students in the metro Detroit area since 2009.

"The Community Choice Scholarship Program was created at the height of the Great Recession as a way to entice Michigan's young talent to stay in-state," said Robert Bava, president and CEO of Community Choice Credit Union. Scholarship America awards grant to Marblehead Dollars for Scholars

  • Marblehead Dollars for Scholars was recently awarded a $10,000 matching grant from Scholarship America, the parent organization to Dollars for Scholars affiliates across the country.

The grant, if matched with an equal amount of funds raised by Marblehead Dollars for Scholars, will provide deserving students the opportunity to receive financially impactful, renewable scholarships, further aligning itself with Scholarship America's renewed focus of helping students complete their degree or program with a reduced level of debt.

"Renewable, financially impactful scholarships that are directed to students with the greatest financial need will be an important tool to improving educational outcomes in our Dollars for Scholars communities," said Scholarship America's president and CEO, Robert C. Ballard. "Our goal with the Dollars for Scholars Affiliate Matching program is to partner with our affiliates and their local supporters to build and sustain renewable scholarship opportunities so that more students across the country can complete their degree or program with a reduced level of debt."

In addition to receiving the $10,000 grant, the Marblehead affiliate will also receive personalized support and tools from Scholarship America to ensure that the program will remain successful in the future.

Established in 1987, Marblehead Dollars for Scholars provides financial need-based scholarships to Marblehead high school students or Marblehead residents who are pursuing their undergraduate education or job-related training. The organization has 31 permanently endowed scholarships and has awarded more than 2 million dollars to local students over the past 29 years.

The generosity of Marblehead residents who donate to the local nonprofit and investment choices made by members of the organization's board of directors have enabled the organization to build their endowment to more than 2 million dollars.

Each year, Marblehead Dollars for Scholars awards approximately 50-60 scholarships to high school seniors and rising college sophomores, junior and seniors with the average value of each scholarship being $2,000.

For the past several years, the local nonprofit's board of directors has been discussing ways to offer larger scholarships that will be more helpful in reducing student debt. When the organization was awarded the Scholarship America $10,000 matching grant, the board went to work to raise its own $10,000 contribution.

Through a "Fund the Need" effort at last fall's annual Hollers for Scholars fundraiser, where generous donors pledged between $100 and $1,000 each, this goal was achieved.

"This new matching grant scholarship will allow us to jump start our high impact award initiative which seeks to establish four-year, renewable awards with increased levels of annual funding," said Marblehead Dollars for Scholars president Todd Zion.

Students will apply for the matching grant scholarship using the same online process used by all Marblehead Dollars for Scholars applicants. However, the matching grant scholarship has particular criteria that must be met beyond demonstrating financial need, which includes: maintaining a 3.0 GPA, demonstrating leadership and/or service that benefits others and overcoming an obstacle in their pursuit of a post-secondary education.

Page 2 of 2 - This new scholarship will provide a minimum of $20,000 over four years to a student who qualifies and is able to maintain all of the requirements during their undergraduate education.

"We're excited and honored that Scholarship America selected our organization to receive this matching grant and we hope this opportunity will lead to the establishment of other high impact scholarships in the future," said Zion.

Scholarship America mobilizes support for students getting into and graduating from college. Since 1958, Scholarship America has distributed more than $3.1 billion in scholarship assistance to more than 2 million students, funding both entry-level and multiyear scholarships and emergency financial grants. Woodlawn senior awarded full engineering scholarship

Weeks before the New Year, Woodlawn High School senior Dameatria Washington had good reason to celebrate.

Washington, 18, received a full scholarship to the engineering program at Morgan State University (MSU), which covers tuition, housing, books and meals, with the caveat that she maintains a high G.P.A in the program.

Washington says she learned the good news after visiting MSU's admission office on what started out as an ordinary school day and ended with cheers and excitement.

Washington took the bus to her mother's job and they drove to MSU's campus to meet with the admissions staff. She presented her SAT scores, high school transcripts and a desire to succeed. After reviewing her documents, she received an acceptance letter and what Washington and her mother, Ethel Joy, initially thought was a partial scholarship. Much to their surprise, it was a full scholarship. The National Honor Society student will begin her freshman year in fall 2016.

Washington says that she had lots of help along her academic journey and her greatest supporter has been her mother. She and her mother relocated to Maryland from South Carolina after a few setbacks. Joy said she wanted her daughter to have a greater chance of succeeding.

"I want her life to be different and better than some things I had to endure growing up," said Joy. "I want her to understand that a good education can take her far— around the world!"

Washington acknowledged the support she received from Ashley Gallant, a guidance counselor at Woodlawn High School.

"She helped me to fill out my college application and other forms too," said Washington. "She's supported and encouraged me every step of the way."

Washington also credits Alloysius Ndyio, a Morgan college assistant who managed the internship program established through a partnership between Woodlawn High School and Parsons Brickenrhoff, an engineering consulting firm. The competitive program is designed to recruit and train honor roll students who are interested in pursuing a career in engineering. Washington wrote a 500-word essay, which stated why she wanted to study business and engineering in college. She was one of six students selected from the high school who received a letter of recommendation from the guidance counselor and was given an internship or acceptance into the program.

As an active member of the National Honor Society at Woodlawn High School, she helped tutor her peers and collected toiletry items for them too. She also participated in several community events and served dinners at a local homeless shelter.

Joy said that her daughter is "a very strong young lady" that has a "giving spirit."

"I encourage her every chance I can," said Joy. "I always tell her, don't let this world change you. I'm praying that she will be a strong leader for other young ladies to look up to."

"A 7th grader who can successfully complete a college course offered by edX is clearly advanced, hard-working and motivated, and that's exactly the type of student who deserves serious consideration for our scholarship program."

"EdX is committed to increasing access to high-quality education for people all over the world," said edX CEO and MIT Professor Anant Agarwal. "We're proud to work with the Cooke Foundation to open new doors to educational opportunity for excellent students who need financial assistance to reach their full potential."

The Cooke Foundation and edX launched the Cooke edX Challenge last year to encourage 7th grade students capable of handling college work and who meet scholarship eligibility requirements for financial need to sign up for one of five edX online courses and to apply for the Cooke Young Scholars Program. Last year, 10 of the Young Scholars selected participated in the Cooke edX Challenge.

Registration for the five edX courses that are part of the Cooke edX Challenge is now open. The first of the five courses begins Jan. 18.

Students who audit and pass one of the five courses and apply for the scholarship will also each receive a $25 Amazon gift card. More information about the Cooke edX Challenge can be found here.

The application period for the Cooke Foundation's Young Scholars Program – the most generous pre-college scholarship and educational support program of its kind in the United States – will begin in late January and will continue until April 14. Detailed information on the program, including instructions on how to apply and a video featuring Young Scholars, can be found here.

Here are the five edX courses that are involved in the Cooke edX Challenge:
