MARQUETTE, Mich. – Four medical students have been awarded the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine UP Campus Mazzuchi Scholarship.

Students Dustin Collins, Angelea Heider, Ashley Parent and Chris Steele were each awarded tuition reduction scholarships. The recipients were selected for their commitment to practicing medicine in the Upper Peninsula after residency training, interest in specializing in emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, hospitalist medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics or psychiatry; and need for financial assistance.

The scholarship fund, which began providing financial assistance in 1983, was renamed the Mazzuchi Scholarship in 2006 to honor Dr. Dan Mazzuchi. The retired physician and former Michigan State University College of Human Medicine Upper Peninsula campus CEO and community assistant dean was instrumental in developing the U.P. community campus, one of the college's seven campuses in Michigan. He also helped launch the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program and served as chief of staff at Marquette General Hospital.

Dustin Collins, a native of Gilbert, Arizona, received his bachelor's degree in political science from Northern Michigan University. While attending NMU, he played varsity hockey for the Wildcats and went on to play professional hockey for 4 years. Dustin returned to NMU to pursue post baccalaureate courses while working as a phlebotomist, being assistant coach for MSHS high school hockey team and volunteering as the strength and conditioning coach for the NMU hockey team. He volunteered for Lake Superior Hospice and Camp STAR which helped affirm his passion for helping others and choosing a career in medicine.

A native of Chassell Michigan, Angelea Heider received her bachelor's degree from Michigan Tech. There she worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant, CNA, on the inpatient unit of UP Health System-Portage, at Portage Pointe, and at the Omega House. She did research involving aerospace medicine and human performance during her undergraduate years which was published in the journal of Aerospace Medicine and Human Performance. Angelea chose medicine based on her love of science and helping others. She looks forward to helping people in rural, underserved areas and forming lifelong relationships with her patients.

Ashley Parent grew up in Marquette, Michigan, and attended Northern Michigan University. She received a bachelor of science in biology-human physiology. Prior to medical school, Ashley was working toward her M.S. from NMU with the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center, something she hopes to complete during her time in Marquette. She also worked in a breast cancer research lab at MSU. Ashley looks forward to learning and applying her knowledge and skills to the care of others.

Chris Steele is a native of Three Lakes, Michigan. He studied biology and chemistry at Northern Michigan University and performed bench research, both for NMU professors and for the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center. He volunteered for the Superior Alliance for Independent Living organization by getting folks dealing with varying forms of disability out fishing and cross country skiing. Chris hopes to continue to participate in research while working to positively impact people's lives through medicine.

Palo Alto superintendent recommends 'no' on weighted grades this year

McGee explained this short-term recommendation in a letter sent to all district parents on Friday. For the few schools that won't accept an official letter, the district will "provide additional documentation and/or aggressive advocacy on behalf of the student," he wrote.

Long term, he proposed that the district convene an advisory committee to make recommendations to him, and he in turn would make a recommendation to the board before the start of the next school year.

Currently, both Palo Alto and Gunn high school only report unweighted GPAs on transcripts, and counselors from both schools inform students of their weighted average during meetings. Gunn counselors, however, report seniors' weighted GPAs in a section of the Common Application for college admissions, while Paly's do not. Both schools have historically sent letters or contacted schools directly on behalf of students who need their weighted GPA to qualify for a scholarship, staff has said.

McGee also recommended revising the district's focus goals — significant, overarching goals adopted each year that drive the board and district's work — at a January board retreat to "replace items in the work plan with this matter, which has become an important topic and is clearly a priority for the community and the board," he wrote.

The school board will vote on McGee's proposals at its meeting Tuesday evening.

McGee's stance on weighted GPAs is aligned with that of both high schools' principals, their school counselors and psychologists and the majority of teachers and staff. They have said that the potential negatives of reporting weighted GPAs — breeding an unhealthy focus on grades rather than a love of learning, discouraging students from taking non-AP or non-honors courses, and changing a historical practice to handle exceptions rather than the norm — outweigh the positives. They have also noted that colleges and universities have their own processes for reviewing GPAs and take into account the fact that reporting practices vary at many high schools.

Some Paly and Gunn students and parents, however, strongly disagree. More than 20 students and parents, primarily from Gunn, turned out to the Oct. 18 board meeting to urge the board to adopt a new practice — reporting weighted GPAs on official transcripts — to recognize students' hard work in advanced courses and to not deprive them of the choice to report weighted GPAs. While the debate over weighted grades was brought to the full board's attention by a Paly senior who wants her school to report the higher average so she can qualify for a large merit-based scholarship, it has struck a chord with others who perceive their very acceptance to college as at risk.

This week, Gunn parents started an online petition to gather support for their position. As of Friday afternoon, just over 300 people had signed it.

"We thank the board for continuing to look for ways to improve our children's education; but this measure has unintended negative consequences, that perhaps, have not been well thought through," the petition reads.

"This is not a source of stress for our children," the petition continues. "In fact, removal of wGPA will add stress to our children because they will have to stress significantly more over maintaining an A, and preserving their GPA. Most likely the students will opt for the less challenging, non-AP class just to preserve their GPA."

McGee has committed to having a uniform practice at both high schools, but only after a committee thoroughly studies the issue with deep input from students, parents, alumni and others, he wrote in his recommendation to the board.

"We understand and empathize with students', parents' and teachers' concerns about admissions and scholarship decisions as well as their concerns about students' health and well-being and therefore want to give any decision regarding long-term practices the diligent attention and depth of thought necessary," he wrote.

Guyra preschool educator wins scholarship

Guyra preschool educator Naomi Hoffman has been awarded a $10,000 scholarship to help build on her qualifications for teaching.

Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall with scholarship winner Naomi Hoffman.

Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall with scholarship winner Naomi Hoffman.

GUYRA preschool educator Naomi Hoffman has been awarded a $10,000 scholarship to help build on her qualifications for teaching.

The mum of four already has a diploma in early childhood teaching but the news she's won the scholarship means she's able to enroll in a four-year bachelor's degree at the University of New England from next year to upgrade her qualifications.

Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall delivered the good news to Mrs Hoffman this week and she's over the moon, even though she's going to continue to juggle her three-day-a-week job at the Guyra Preschool and Long Day Care centre with family commitments and study.

"I'm just really excited about this," she said.

"I wouldn't have been able to do it without the scholarship and this will be a huge help."

She gained her TAFE diploma five years ago and hopes to undertake this next skills step with full-time online external study to get her degree.

Mr Marshall has congratulated Naomi on the scholarship coup, saying diploma-qualified early educators were the first beneficiaries of his government's commitment to strengthen early childhood education for children in rural and remote communities.

"Naomi is a caring and committed early childhood teacher and besides this award being great news for her personally, it's great news for the children and parents of the Guyra preschool community too," Mr Marshall said.

"The importance of quality early childhood education can't be overstated because it gives children the best start in life."

Mr Marshall said Naomi's scholarship award was part of the NSW Government's $80 million education blueprint for action program, and are specifically for those working in regional, rural and remote areas, outside of the big cities.

"We want our local educators to have the best qualifications and this scholarship scheme is helping them achieve those ambitions but also at the same time improve the delivery of early childhood education in our communities," he said.

Mr Marshall said the next round of scholarships would open in April 2017 and he's encouraging other early childhood teachers to consider applying.

WC streamlines scholarship applications

For the Weatherford College Foundation, making the scholarship process more transparent and easier to access for students is a priority this year as it managed to raise an estimated $18,000 in funds last week at its annual golf tournament.

"There are lots of great sponsors," said Brent Baker, Weatherford College vice president of institutional advancement at the golf tournament.

While students can currently apply for scholarships online, The college is working on revamping its online scholarship system so it is user friendly and accessible to students, Baker said.

An estimated two-thirds of full-time students paid for college with the help of financial aid in the form of grants and scholarships in 2014-15, according to College Board, an american non-profit educational institution that also administers national standardized tests.

The system will also make it easier for the various committees to review applicants as well, Baker said.

"We give more than $250,000 in scholarship funds every year and this year, we're instituting a new online system for students to apply for scholarships," he said. "It should be a more user-friendly, dynamic system for students applying."

Students who are interested in higher education is always a good thing, said said Crystal Brown, Weatherford College public relations coordinator.

"It's exciting to see students who are passionate about learning and who want to go out and attain their goals," she said."It's important to be a well rounded person. You can never stop learning. You learn your entire life."

The new system currently being worked on is supposed to help students navigate the amount of scholarships available and the requirements for them, in a more easier-to-see manner, Baker said.

"The biggest difference will be the ability to sort and review," he said. "What I'm hoping it does, is it makes it easier for students to apply whether they're in high school and about to apply to college or current WC students. I'm always surprised by how few students apply. I think that there's a misconception out there that you have to have a 4.0 GPA to earn a scholarship and that's just not true."

"Anyone that's planning to attend Weatherford College in the Fall of 2017 should apply for scholarships," he continued.

Four Tips to Find Easy Scholarships to Apply For

Some scholarships will be easier to apply for than others. Keep in mind that if they are really easy to apply for, e.g. if they just require a couple of sentences by way of application (instead of requesting an essay, personal statement, proof of grades, a CV, examples of extra-curricular activities of sports or volunteering) then there will probably be more competition for that scholarship. Everyone wants an easy option and the scholarship may not amount to a high financial reward. That said, you must to be in it to win it and even small scholarships here and there can help.

There are many ways to pay for college. This article focuses on making the scholarship search as easy as possible for you, whilst trying to keep it realistic and relevant to your needs.

1. Be prepared.

Be prepared to thoroughly research relevant scholarships yourself and send in the applications. Do not pay someone to do this research for you. Both searching for and completing the applications is time consuming, and it may feel like you are having to repeat a lot of information in slightly different ways, but it's worth it when successful. If you are put off by applying, other people will be, too. If you actually get your applications in, then you are already one step ahead of most of them. The more you apply for the better. If you have done your research before you start, you'll have already decided which scholarships are worth your while applying for. You will have checked that you meet all their requirements and therefore stand a better chance of success.

2. Know the amount you want.

To some extent, it depends on how much scholarship money would be beneficial to you. Some weird scholarships are for a lower amount of money, and may not require you to submit such a lengthy essay response, but may offer a $500, $1,000 or $2,000 dollar scholarship to the successful candidate. These may be easy to apply for and easy to find online with a quick Internet search. You can specifically search for "no-essay scholarships."

3. Think outside of the box.

Do you belong to a club or church, or  do you work for a business that funds private scholarships? Are there big businesses near where you live that may offer a scholarship (and perhaps future employment once you have graduated)? It may depend on what sort of study you are interested in, i.e. if it is something like chemistry or engineering then look at large organizations/industries connected to them near where you are located. If they do have scholarships, enquire whether you're eligible to apply.

There are big companies that offer scholarships. For example: Dr Pepper offers $100,000 to students ages 18-24 years and gives four awards. The entry for this is a 350-word response. Then students need to get friends to vote for them, submit a video, and attend a college football conference championship game. There's a $20,000 Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Scholarship that gives 20 awards per year; this requires applicants to demonstrate the good skills of being motivated and showing good morals, plus good sportsmanship with a desire to lead. There are certain scholarships affiliated with certain religions such as the Christian College Scholarship worth $2,500.

There will be universities that are local to you, universities that teach specific courses that are highly relevant to your chosen area of study, and universities that have outstanding reputations that you'd like to attend. In all of these cases, go directly to the university's main website and type "scholarships" into the search-box. If they're good, reputable universities, with a quick search you'll find all the scholarship opportunities that they have to offer. Some university websites will break this down specifically into subject/department areas for scholarships. If the government of the country you live in funds any research (for example in the UK they have research councils), they're likely to pay this funding directly to universities, and then they distribute that money as scholarships.

4. Pick the right scholarships.

Just like when choosing college, ensure that the scholarship you are applying for is for something that you are really passionate about and enjoy. If you enjoy what you are applying to do, the application for it will seem easy and not hard work at all. For example, if creative writing is your passion and you want to study that at university, having to complete a creative writing task for your scholarship application should actually be a pleasure. We often excel at what we enjoy, so your application may stand out from the rest. You may find the scholarship application task easy, whereas another person may struggle with it.

Many "Easy Scholarships" mean that you don't have to do a lengthy application form, essay, or show grades, but many students will apply for these. Generally the amount you could get isn't as great as some other more traditional scholarships unless it's a promotional one, such as the Dr. Pepper one mentioned in point four above. You can look for many easy scholarships online from scholarship websites. Remember, the more you find and apply for the better.

College life is not easy, but having scholarships will definitely help you financially and that will make your life much easier.

Liberty Power Honors Bright Horizons Scholarship Winners

October 17, 2016

Liberty Power, the nation's largest owner-operated retail electricity supplier, is proud to announce the winners of its Liberty Power Bright Horizons Scholarship program. The presentations of checks totaling $20,000 were awarded to three college students at the USHCC National Convention held October 9-11 in Miami, FL.

The Bright Horizons program was established in 2013 when Liberty Power co-founders, David Hernandez and Alberto Daire, committed $100,000 over five years to the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) Foundation.   The Bright Horizons Scholarship endeavors to promote and encourage educational efforts in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through awards to college students majoring in these fields who also have an interest in pursuing a career in energy and the environment.

"It's a continued pleasure to collaborate with Liberty Power on the Bright Horizons Scholarship. The USHCC Foundation is honored to be involved in promoting the advancement of STEM education, particularly among ethnic groups that are under-represented in these important fields," said USHCC Foundation Chairman, Nina Vaca.

The grand prize, a $10,000 scholarship, was awarded to Twymun K. Safford, who is earning undergraduate degrees in Physics and Mathematics from the University of West Florida.

"I am honored to be recognized as a Liberty Power Bright Horizons Scholarship winner," Mr. Safford stated. "My goals include pursuing a Ph.D. in nuclear and high-energy physics in order to contribute to research endeavors that will yield safer, more efficient energy alternatives."

The $6,000 scholarship was awarded to Agni Guerrero, an undergraduate student at New Mexico State University who is majoring in electrical engineering.

"The Liberty Power Bright Horizons Scholarship will provide me with the financial support needed to pursue a master's degree," Ms. Guerrero said.  "I will be able to spread the message to other minority students that no matter what your current situation might be, with dedication and the right tools it is possible to achieve your educational and career goals."

Samantha Michael was awarded the $4,000 scholarship. She is earning her undergraduate degree in nuclear engineering at North Carolina State University.

"I hope to play an integral role in the development of the newer, more robust technology that is going to be needed to further promote zero-emission power sources," Ms. Michael stated. "Such a prestigious award as the Liberty Power Bright Horizons Scholarship will provide the increased credibility I need to have my ideas taken seriously."

Winners were chosen by a panel of judges comprised of policymakers and business leaders within the energy industry, previous Bright Horizons Scholarship winners, the USHCC Foundation, and a collective vote from Liberty Power team members. The three winners were honored by Nina Vaca, USHCC Foundation Chairman, Alberto Daire, co-founder and President of Liberty Power, as well as Tim LoCascio, Liberty Power's Director of Marketing and Bright Horizons Program Director, during the annual convention's closing gala on October 11.

"We are extremely proud to be able to support such an exceptional group of talented students," Daire stated. "It's personally very rewarding to be able to support the educational pursuits of the future generation and provide them with a memorable experience."

Chevron spends N6bn on scholarship in 10 years

A  whopping N6 billion has been spent on scholarship awards in 10 years, oil and giant, Chevron Nigeria Ltd (CNL) has disclosed.

No fewer than 15,000 students, the company added, have benefited from its educational support programmes across the country.

General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs (PGPA) CNL, Mr Deji Haastrup, disclosed these in Asaba, Delta State during the 11th edition of National Arts Competition/Arts Exhibition and Prize Giving Ceremony organised by NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Education.

According to Mr Haastrup, the beneficiaries included those in Agbami Medical and Engineering Scholarship Scheme which is funded by Star Deep Water Petroleum Ltd, a company owned by CNL and other co-ventures in the Agbami Field.

He added that the company had donated 27 laboratories as well as 13 Hybrid Libraries to various schools across Nigeria.

Haastrup revealed that Delta State was the first state to receive a fully-equipped modern science laboratory from Chevron.

Chevron's support towards educational development, according to him, has brought about 64 per cent increase in West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) enrolment.

Mr Haastrup said this has led to an improved average performance of students supported by the company from 18 per cent in 2013 to 44 per cent in 2014.

He pointed out that every year, the number of entry into the Art competition keeps increasing due to the general acceptance by Nigerians, noting that the 2016 edition of the competition tagged: "Waste to Wealth" was part of Chevron's strategies towards boosting the country's economy.

On his part, chief host of the event, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, represented by his deputy, Mr Kingsley Otuaro remarked that Chevron's educational policy was in conformity with Delta State government's SMART agenda.

He commended the company for championing education and other development programmes for the welfare of their host communities.

The Group General Manager, National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS), Mr Dafe Sejebor, assured Chevron of his company's continuous support in making sure the National Arts Competition for Nigeria Secondary School Students continues to succeed.

The NAPIMS boss, who was represented by Corporation's Deputy Manager, Community Relation's 'B', Mrs Clementina  Arubi, lauded CNL for sustaining the programme.

She underscored the vital role played by the Delta State Ministry of Higher and Basic Education, the Federal Ministry of Education as well as management and teachers of various schools for their supports.

Meanwhile, no fewer than 20 winners from different schools across the country emerged and were presented with awards.

The overall winner for Senior Secondary School category was Azike Chioma Anita, while Atakere Oritsemeyiwa Edith emerged winner in the category of the Junior Secondary School.

    Scholarship providers invited to Prescott

The Arizona Community Foundation of Yavapai County, in collaboration with the Arizona Community Foundation of Sedona, is inviting community groups to participate in the 2nd annual Cash for College Scholarship Awareness Nights.

Sponsored by Yavapai College, each of two events provides an opportunity for students, their families and local educators to learn more about scholarships available to local students for college studies. Scholarship providers that participated last year met with 200 students interested in learning about local scholarship opportunities.

Recent declines in scholarship applications across the nation can be attributed to a lack of awareness from students and parents. This year, to help increase awareness and provide an opportunity for the community to form a collective response, ACF of Yavapai County is partnering with ACF of Sedona. Two evening events, one in Prescott and one in Clarkdale, will connect the county's students directly with scholarship grantors.

The Cash for College Scholarship Awareness Nights, coordinated to accommodate students' and parents' busy schedules, will provide an opportunity for students to learn more about scholarship opportunities. Each scholarship or organization will have its own booth from which to distribute information and speak with interested and qualified students. An informational document including a brief description of all represented opportunities will be distributed during the events to give students and parents a reference guide cataloguing the available scholarships.

A variety of scholarship funds established with the Arizona Community Foundation offer support for students in Yavapai County. With one application, students are matched with more than 150 scholarships for which they qualify through the Arizona Community Foundation's online scholarship system. Students will be made aware of application requirements for local scholarships at the events.

If you provide a scholarship supporting Yavapai County students, please join us!

New military scholarship offered at Western

College is expensive. According to America's Debt Help Organization, the average college graduate in 2014 accrued a total of $33,000 in student loan debt. Luckily, Western Michigan University offers a number of scholarships which can provide much-needed financial relief to students. This year, that number will grow by one.

The Veterans and Dependents Scholarship is this year's new university-wide military scholarship that is offered to veterans, active military members, and military dependents. It arose due to a lack of financial assistance for individuals whose lives have been impacted by the military in some way, Military Outreach and Recruitment Coordinator Billy Clayton said.

There is a widely-held preconceived belief that military is synonymous with free schooling. This couldn't be further from the truth, Clayton said.

"People just assume that being a part of the military gets your school paid for," Clayton said. "Most individuals on national guard or reserves get very little educational benefit."

The Veterans and Dependents Scholarship aims to solve this problem by being a more inclusive form of financial assistance, unlike other scholarships in the same vein.

"Some scholarships are only for ROTC members. This scholarship reaches out regardless of degree or year in school. It is a needs and merit based scholarship, with more focus on the needs," Clayton said.

Any student that is currently serving, has served, or is a military dependent may apply for this scholarship. There is a minimum GPA requirement of 2.5 to apply. Applications can be found online and will be accepted by the Office of Military and Veterans Affairs until April 1. Decisions for awards will be made in the following fall, Clayton said.

The Office of Military and Veterans Affairs is the heart of a network of support lines created for the benefit of military students, Clayton said. Scholarships compose merely the tip of an iceberg-sized wealth of assistance offered by this organization.

"We're the first stop any military member should make," Clayton said. "We provide assistance with housing, employment, childcare, and not only that but with dependents as well. We limit the barriers for students transitioning into school and help make this transition as fast as possible."

This organization also created the bold, iconic tagline which encapsulates the essence of its new, comprehensive scholarship in a single question; Are you a Western Warrior? Any student that can respond with a 'yes' to this question would benefit greatly from applying to the Veterans and Dependents Scholarship today, Clayton said.

Students encouraged to apply for Daniels Scholarship

Motivated college-bound high school seniors in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming are encouraged to visit DanielsFund.org to apply online for the Daniels Scholarship Program. The application deadline is Nov. 30 at 4 p.m.

"In establishing the Daniels Scholarship Program, cable television pioneer Bill Daniels wanted to seek outstanding young people who possess tremendous strength of character, the passion to succeed, a willingness to work hard, and a commitment to giving back to the community," explained Linda Childears, president and CEO of the Daniels Fund.

The Daniels Scholarship Program provides the opportunity to obtain a college education at any accredited nonprofit college or university in the United States, complete with financial and personal support throughout the journey. Selected scholars are offered resources, encouragement, and inspiration far beyond the financial assistance needed to earn a college degree. The goal is not only to help Daniels Scholars succeed in college, but to ensure that they thrive beyond their years in college.

This four-year, annually-renewable college scholarship is a "last dollar" scholarship which covers the unmet need of the student after all other financial aid resources and their Expected Family Contribution have been applied.

For students choosing to attend one of 24 partner schools in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, or Wyoming, their Expected Family Contribution will be covered in addition. A complete list of partner schools can be found at DanielsFund.org/Scholarships/PartnerSchools.asp.

To be eligible to apply for the scholarship, students must demonstrate financial need and:

    • Be a current high school senior graduating during the 2016-2017 academic year from a high school in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, or Wyoming.

    • Be a current resident of one of these four states and a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.

    • Earn ACT scores of at least 17 in each category (Math, English, Reading, Science); or an SAT math score of at least 400 and critical reading score of at least 440. Writing scores are not required. All test scores must come from a single test. Super-scoring is not accepted.

The Daniels Scholarship Program has provided more than $138 million in scholarships to nearly 3,500 students since the program was launched in 2000.

The Daniels Fund is a private charitable foundation dedicated to making life better for the people of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming through its grants program, scholarship program, and ethics initiative. Visit DanielsFund.org to learn more.

Michigan State Establishes Scholarship in Honor of Mylan Hicks

In honor of late Michigan State Spartans football player Mylan Hicks, MSU has established the Mylan Hicks Memorial Football Scholarship Endowment.

Hicks, a 2014 graduate, was tragically killed early Sunday in a nightclub shooting in Calgary, where he had been playing for the CFL's Calgary Stampeders. The team will wear black shoes and socks in his honor Saturday against Indiana.

The endowment is being established at the request of family and friends, per the athletic department's official website:

"Mylan was the kind of guy who always had a gleam in his eye and he always brought something good out in you as a person," said MSU head football coach Mark Dantonio. "One of the best things you can say about someone is that they're a great teammate and if you listen this week to those who played with Mylan you kept hearing that over and over. He approached everything he did going 100 miles per hour and this scholarship will ensure his legacy endures forever with Spartan football."

"The entire Spartan family is deeply saddened by the loss of Mylan Hicks. The establishment of this endowed scholarship by his friends is an on-going reminder of a special person, great teammate and true Spartan," said MSU director of athletics Mark Hollis.

Hicks, 23 and a Detroit native, recorded 19 tackles and four pass breakups during his senior year in 2014.
