Michigan State Establishes Scholarship in Honor of Mylan Hicks

In honor of late Michigan State Spartans football player Mylan Hicks, MSU has established the Mylan Hicks Memorial Football Scholarship Endowment.

Hicks, a 2014 graduate, was tragically killed early Sunday in a nightclub shooting in Calgary, where he had been playing for the CFL's Calgary Stampeders. The team will wear black shoes and socks in his honor Saturday against Indiana.

The endowment is being established at the request of family and friends, per the athletic department's official website:

"Mylan was the kind of guy who always had a gleam in his eye and he always brought something good out in you as a person," said MSU head football coach Mark Dantonio. "One of the best things you can say about someone is that they're a great teammate and if you listen this week to those who played with Mylan you kept hearing that over and over. He approached everything he did going 100 miles per hour and this scholarship will ensure his legacy endures forever with Spartan football."

"The entire Spartan family is deeply saddened by the loss of Mylan Hicks. The establishment of this endowed scholarship by his friends is an on-going reminder of a special person, great teammate and true Spartan," said MSU director of athletics Mark Hollis.

Hicks, 23 and a Detroit native, recorded 19 tackles and four pass breakups during his senior year in 2014.
