A workshop was organized in Mysuru on Wednesday to create awareness among students about the portal. After inaugurating the workshop, Akram Pasha, director of minority welfare directorate, said that minority students — Muslims, Christians, Jains, Bhuddists, Sikhs and Parsis -- are eligible for pre-metric scholarship scheme of the directorate of minorities. Earlier, scholarships were given by the social welfare department, tribal welfare boards, minority boards and the wakf board, but now all these applications can be processed on the same portal. The portal ensures transparency and directly connects the beneficiaries and the directorate. The scholar ship amount is directly credited to the student's account. The directorate will provide scholarships amounting to Rs 12 lakh to students online this year. This is a central government initiative aimed at encouraging and supporting minority students to continue college education. Especially Muslim students tend to discontinue education due to financial problems, Akram Pasha noted.
Officials of the education department and minority welfare department under the Mysuru revenue division attended the one-day workshop at Kalamandira.
