Military Matters; Local scholarship sends military to school for free

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — One local university is providing our military with the chance to further their education at no cost.

"The scholarship is a great opportunity, especially for guys that have been wounded and can't continue in the career field that they learned in the military," said Travis Tyrer, a scholarship recipient.

The Wounded Warrior Scholarship provided by Colorado Technical University (CTU) has given at least 600 active or former military the chance to pursue an education without spending a dime.

"The scholarship covers all tuition, books, fees and we provide a laptop," said Mark Seglem, the Regional Vice President for CTU. "So it's a complete full ride scholarship in any of our programs."

Tyrer was wounded in Afghanistan and is a two time recipient of the scholarship — something he says granted him the opportunity to pursue a career in the IT field.

"The scholarship from CTU has provided me the skill set and the knowledge to get into the field and advance in the field," said Tyrer.

"For all of our students, particularly for our Wounded Warrior Scholarship winners, we provide a dedicated success coach who will be with them from the time they start at the university to the time they complete their degree," said Seglem.

The scholarship is open to any active or retired military but it's also open to family members and caregivers.

"We want to hear about their experiences, how the scholarship will help them fulfill their personal or professional goals and what it will do to change their lives," said Seglem.

CTU awards 50 scholarships per year with 25 benefiting Wounded Warriors and the other half helping those family members and care takers.

The scholarship applies to both in the classroom and online learning.
