Mixing the skill of playing golf with the attitude attached to the sport's legacy is something the Lancaster County Golf Association and the Lancaster Ladies City-County Golf Association hold in high regard.
To foster the combination of those two ideals, the organizations annually award a scholarship to a Lancaster-Lebanon League golfer who has demonstrated both.
For the 2015-16 school year, the Lancaster County Golf Association presented its scholarship to Manheim Township's Peter Chieppor.
Chieppor's Blue Streaks teammate Addy Deery was named the scholarship winner for the Lancaster Ladies City-County Golf Association.
Both student-athletes received a check for $1,000 to go toward their college education.
Chieppor was selected from several applicants, based on the criteria of evidence of the values of golf, improvement over his high school years, golfing excellence, academic performance, and community involvement.
He will attend Villanova University in the fall.
"Receiving the award is very gratifying,'' he said. "Playing golf, you are out practicing and mainly concentrating on getting the ball in the hole but there is the character aspect and the integrity aspect as well. That contributes to this award, so it's good to be recognized.''
Chieppor was a two-time captain of the golf team and earned Section One All-Star Honorable Mention as a senior. He participated on four straight PIAA team championship qualifying teams with Manheim Township winning a state title in 2012.
He helped the Blue Streaks go 41-1 in Section One play and his 79.6 league average was seventh-best in the section. He tied for 19th with an 80 at the L-L League Tournament at Tanglewood Manor.
Chieppor also carries a 4.001 weighted GPA and is also the vice president of Manheim Township's Future Business Leaders of America. He said getting good grades and navigating a golf course are similar in many ways.
"You have to think your way through all the shots, walk yourself through that mentally,'' he said. "They go hand in hand, really, maintaining that mental acuity.''
Deery possesses many of the same attributes demonstrated by Chieppor. She fulfills the scholarship requirements of knowledge of and skill in the game of golf and good citizenship.
"I'm very honored to have won this scholarship,'' she said. "Haley (Goodling) won it last year and I'm good friends with her and have played a lot of golf with her.''
(Goodling, by the way, won both scholarships last year).
Deery, the fourth winner of the Ladies' scholarship, will continue her academic and golf careers at the University of North Carolina Asheville.
She was the Lancaster-Lebanon League Female Golfer of the Year and won the L-L Girls' title for the second straight year. She finished second in the District Three Class AAA Tournament, was 10th at regionals and 15th in the PIAA AAA Tournament.
Deery, too, sees the similarities between athletics and playing golf.
"If you have a tricky shot, there's the debate on whether or not you should go for it or take the smart shot,'' she said. "You should take the smart shot and save the strokes in the long run. With academics, you need to put in the work as you do with golf, preparing for tests and using your time wisely.''
For both, the camaraderie fostered through the game was and is an added bonus. Deery commended her Township teammates for their help in making her a better player.
"It's the little things associated with the game,'' Chieppor said. "Things like meeting all the people I got to meet and having two great coaches (Skip Walters and Steve Brenner). Overall, a really good experience.''
