Greenville Technical College is offering a new scholarship for up to $2,000 per student per term for short-term workforce training to get a job or advance in a job. The scholarship's are offered by the college's Division of Corporate and Career Development with funding from the state through the S.C. Technical College System.
With $700,000 in funds available, the Workforce Pathways Scholarship are available for training in select STEM-related career fields and could benefit hundreds of local residents who need workforce training for employment.
The scholarship will cover the cost of course fees and textbooks for qualified GTC courses in the areas of health care, manufacturing, information technology, and transportation and logistics. Training available through the scholarship program will prepare students for career fields including medical coding, emergency medical technology, medical assisting, phlebotomy, web design, networking, welding, and advanced manufacturing.
"We are very excited to be able to offer this excellent opportunity for students to train for a new career," Cynthia Eason, vice president for Corporate and Career Development, said in a release. "Frequently, the cost of continuing education workforce training programs can be a hardship on our students as these courses do not qualify for federal and state financial aid.
"This new scholarship program now makes it possible for so many people to be able to pursue short-term workforce training in fields like health care, advanced manufacturing, information technology, transportation and logistics," she said.
The scholarship is available for courses with a start date from Feb. 22 through June 30, 2016, until funds are expended. Students may enroll in multiple courses within a term, up to the maximum of $2,000. Term 1 courses apply to those beginning Feb. 22 through April 30. Term 2 applies to those courses beginning May 1 through June 30. Students are responsible for paying for any additional costs beyond the $2,000 per term limit. The scholarship program is only available for this limited time period and is not expected to be offered again, as it is funded with nonrecurring money.
Scholarship eligibility is not based on financial need or previous academic performance. To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old, reside in South Carolina, and be able to successfully meet program or course pre-requisites and requirements.
