The Joci Awards Scholarship Competition finalists

The Joci Awards Scholarship Competition was founded in 2009 and since then it has awarded more than $585, 000 in scholarships in theatre acting, musical theatre singing and dancing. Each year it awards $100,000 to deserving students in the performing arts. Las Casas Foundation offers several programs to help fund and nurture the performing arts, one of which is the Joci Awards Scholarship Competition. The 25 finalists from 12 high schools in San Antonio and Austin have been announced. They will be competing for a chance at a portion of $100,000 in scholarship funds and the chance to participate in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards in New York City. The Joci Awards Scholarship Competition will be held at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre on Sunday May 1, 2016 at 7p.m. and is open to the public. Tickets start at $10 and may be purchased through Ticketmaster online, by calling Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000 or in person at the Majestic Theatre Box Office located at 226 East Houston Street. Ticket sales benefit the competition's scholarship fund. Scholarships range from $2,000 to $5,000 in competition categories, an additional $10,000 is awarded to the best overall performance and $1,500 scholarships are awarded to essay winners.

The five categories in the competition include Acting, Best Lead Actor in a Musical, Best Lead Actress in a Musical, Dance and Vocal. Some of the finalists include: Acting: Sophia Bernard from Douglas MacArthur High School, Joshua Bippert from Winston Churchill High School, Andrea Fuentes from Ronald Reagan High School, Elizabeth Taylor from Ronald Reagan High School and Sam Terry from Keystone School. Best lead actor in a musical: Travis Anderson from North East School of the Arts, Tamir Meishar from North East School of the Arts, Preston Perez from North East School of the Arts, Weston Smith from Theodore Roosevelt High School and Andrew Welch from Lago Vista High School. Best lead actress in a musical: Madeline Burrow from North East School of the Arts, Sarah Cosgrove from Douglas MacArthur High School, Gabriella Garcia from St. Mary's Hall, Rachel Ryan, Ronald Reagan High School, Andrea Varnado from North East School of the Arts.
