Lubbock High student earns National Merit
Pretom R. Shome, a Lubbock High School senior, was named a National Merit Scholarship finalist, according to a list of finalists released by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation Tuesday.
Candidates for the scholarship were announced in September and Lubbock ISD had five semifinalists including Shome, Jonathan R. Welsh and Stanley Yoang, all from Lubbock High School, and Bryla A. Birdwell and Tucker I. Matis, both from Coronado High School.
"We're no stranger to students who are National Merit finalists," said Lubbock High Principal Douglas Young.
Shome is an active participant on the school's Academic Decathlon team, University Interscholastic League competitions and a mock trial participant, Young said.
National Merit Scholarship recipients must meet the following requirements, according to the NMS website: take the PSAT/NMSQT by their junior year of high school, be enrolled as a high school student and plan for full time enrollment in college in the fall after finishing high school, and they must be a United States citizen or U.S. lawful permanent resident with intentions to become a citizen, according to the National Merit Scholarship Program webpage.
