The India Students Association of Texas Tech received a $5,000 donation Tuesday from the India Association of West Texas.
A group of about 40 people, mostly India Student Association and India Association of West Texas members, gathered at the International Culture Center on the Tech campus to commemorate the donation.
The money will go toward student scholarships, said Sukant, Misra, associate vice provost for international programs at Tech and president-elect of the India Association of West Texas. It will be added into a scholarship fund and broken into several $1,000 scholarships and awarded to eligible India Student Association members, he said.
"Membership is open to everybody," he said.
About three to seven scholarships are awarded through the scholarship fund each year, he said.
India generally sends more international students than any other country to Tech, Misra said. This year there are about 485 students from India, he said.
Sahith Annavarapu, president of India Student Association, said there are more than 300 members in the organization.
"They're competitive scholarships," he said.
Kishan Thakrar, treasurer of the India Association of West Texas, said the scholarship fund at Tech began six years ago.
Students who apply for the scholarships offered through the fund must be members of the India Student Association and meet other qualifications.
The scholarship fund is just one of several recipients of money donated by the India Association of West Texas each year, Thakrar said.
The organization regularly gives money to nonprofits such as Lubbock Meals on Wheels, the Salvation Army, the Boys & Girls Club of Lubbock, the South Plains Food Bank and various other organizations.
