Applications available for local scholarships

Bill Hecker Academic Award

A scholarship named after late R.A. Long football, basketball and baseball player Bill Hecker is open to R.A. Long senior athletes who excel in the classroom.

The Bill Hecker Academic Award is $500 to the college of the student's choice. In addition to the scholarship, the recipient is given an individual plaque and his or her name will be inscribed on a perpetual plaque in the trophy case at RAL.

To apply, a student must be a senior athlete who plans to pursue a higher education at a two- or four-year college and has a 3.4 or higher grade-point average.

Other requirements: a student must have played at least two seasons and finished each season in good standing; must have taken academically challenging courses (AP classes, honors classes, higher level math and science courses, etc.); must be known among staff, students and coaches as a friendly and courteous person; and must have shown involvement in school activities in addition to athletics.

An advisory committee consisting of Faye Richert, Nick Wheeler, Scott Urling, Bruce Blackstone, Mike Monroe, Belinda (Begley) Jacobs and Jim Karnofski, chaired by Jane Ditewig, will choose the scholarship recipient.

Donations are being accepted toward the award, which will be given this spring. The trust accepts checks, which can be made out to R.A. Long with the memo line, Bill Hecker Academic Award. They can be dropped off at the R.A. Long ASB office or mailed to R.A. Long ASB Office, Attention: Jaime Barchus, Bill Hecker Academic Award, 2903 Nichols Blvd., Longview. The deadline is April 1.

Lower Columbia School Retirees

Applications for two $1,000 scholarship are available from the Lower Columbia School Retirees Association to graduating seniors in Cowlitz and Wahkiakum counties who are committed to a career in the field of education or who are seeking vocational training.

Students must hold a 3.2 or higher grade-point average.

Application forms and details are available at lcsra.net and must be postmarked by March 2. Internet Explorer users should click on the x in a box on the lower right side of the page. Google Chrome users click on Scholarships.

Altrusa International of Longview-Kelso

Altrusa International of Longview-Kelso has three local scholarships available to college students.

The Altrusa International Scholarship for Technical Education Students is available to students attending Lower Columbia College. The $1,000 scholarship is for a student in a two-year technical program in the trades, manufacturing or industrial fields.

The $1,400 Altrusa International Scholarship is for a student attending LCC during the 2016-17 school year; and the $1,000 Jane Kalahan Smith Scholarship is for a student who has an interest in the sciences, who has completed studies at LCC and who will attend a college or university for the 2016-17 school year.

Application forms are available from high school counselors, in the LCC admission center/financial aid lobby or on the LCC website at www.lowercolumbia.edu. Click on "Site A-Z" at the top of the page, then click on the letter "O" in the next window, then click on "Outside Scholarships."

Complete criteria is included on the applications which must be sent to Altrusa and postmarked by April 1.

Recipients will be notified by mail.

American Association of University Women

Scholarship applications are available for the 2016-17 school year from the Cowlitz County branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a Cowlitz County woman who has completed two years of college and who will be a full-time junior or senior student at an accredited college in fall 2016.

The selection will be based on scholarship, leadership and community involvement/life experience. Applications must be postmarked by April 2.

Clatskanie Foundation

Applications are available for eight Clatskanie Foundation Scholarships.

Details about each scholarship are available on the Clatskanie Middle/High School website at http://clatskaniehigh.or.ch.schoolinsites.com/

Candidates are encouraged to carefully review the criteria for each scholarship and apply for all scholarships for which they are eligible.

If they fit the criteria, 2016 CM/HS graduatesl may apply for all the scholarships listed on the website. Three scholarships, the Scott Evenson Memorial Scholarship, the Russella nd viena Fluhrer Scholarship and the Scott Blecha Memorial Scholarship are available for past CM/HS graduates.

To be considered, applications must be completed and postmarked no later than March 11.
