The 15th annual Stars of Tomorrow Tricky Tray, an event to raise funds for scholarships for graduating seniors, will be hosted by the Business and Professional Women's Club of Port Jervis on March 12. It will be at the Port Jervis High School with a snow date set for March 13. Doors open at noon, calling begins at 2.
A tricky tray is an upscale penny social with prizes and gifts that have been grouped around themes. For this occasion more than 275 "baskets" or "trays" will be offered.
The game of chance is played the same way as a penny social, which is believed to have started as an early form of entertainment in colonial days when women would get together for tea or to make quilts. Items from home, like jam or jelly, would be placed on a table and pieces of paper (now tickets) with a name or number of the person desiring the item, would be drawn.
The BPW will also have a special table with high-end items like designer handbags, a 40-inch television, and a fishing trip on Lake Ontario.
The fundraiser, co-chaired this year by Debbie Lasch and Dawn Lasch, is very popular and draws a large crowd. As the group's scholarship fund is long standing, the generosity of the public is depended on and is greatly appreciated. Many gifts have been donated through the business community. Last year, 13 students each received $1,500. Over the last 14 years, more than $200,000 has been given to 158 graduating seniors. The BPW is to be congratulated for pulling together a successful and beneficial event that brings a community together.
