An Athens resident and 13 other Georgia students are among this year's 25 named recipients of the University of Georgia Foundation's most prestigious and lucrative scholarships.
Clarke Central High School graduate Nicole Marie Googe is one of 17 students named Foundation Fellows for the upcoming year and intends to study mathematics, according to the university's announcement.
An additional eight students will receive Bernard Ramsey Honors Scholarships.
In-state Foundation Fellows get an annual stipend of $12,300 and receive the Zell Miller Scholarship, which covers their tuition costs. Out-of-state Foundation Fellows receive $20,000 and out-of-state tuition waivers.
Foundation Fellows also get $9,000 for travel and $1,750 to fund research and academic conference attendance, in addition to a Maymester study-abroad program at Oxford University and three spring trips.
In-state Ramsey Scholars get an annual stipend of $6,400, plus the Zell Miller Scholarship; out-of-state Ramsey Scholars receive a $10,400 annual stipend and out-of-state tuition waivers. Ramsey Scholars also receive $3,000 in travel-study grants.
About 1,100 applicants vied for the Foundation Fellowship. The 17 who received it this year had an average SAT score of 1564 on the math and verbal parts of the test, an average ACT score of 35, and an average high school grade-point average of 4.22 on a 4.0 scale. The extra points are for advanced placement courses.
Ramsey Scholars this year had an average SAT score of 1547, an average ACT of 35, and average high school grade-point average of 4.28.
