High school students can apply for scholarship honoring Rev. Pinckney

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Qualified students can now apply for the Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney Scholarship to help defer costs of a higher education.

The scholarship was created in July by a group of anonymous donors to honor the victims of the June 17 shooting at Mother Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston, including Pinckney.

The scholarship is open to African-American high school seniors entering a two or four-year degree program this upcoming fall, to include victims' immediate family members.  Applicants must live in Charleston, Beaufort or Jasper County.  Applications are available at http://coastalcommunityfoundation.org/.  The deadline is apply is 11:59 p.m. on April 15.

Three million dollars was originally set aside by the donors.  The fund currently has $3.2 million, according to the Coastal Community Foundation, which is managing the scholarship program.  Donations can be made online at the Coastal Community Foundation's website by designating a gift towards "Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney Scholarship Fund."

Chosen scholars will receive financial assistance of up to $10,000, which is renewable for up to four years of schooling.  Recipients will also have access to supportive resources, including training and workshops.  The foundation anticipates eight students will be awarded funds in the inaugural year, with more recipients in subsequent years.
