Travis Credit Union offering 20 scholarships worth $1,500 each

For college-bound high school seniors, getting ready to fill out federal financial aid applications or nervously expecting an acceptance letter may occupy some of their time.

But by taking a few hours to fill out a scholarship application, it also could mean money in otherwise empty pockets, thanks to Travis Credit Union.

The nonprofit financial institution announced earlier this month that it will award 20 scholarships, of $1,500 each, to those who qualify.

Each applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, be bound for a two– or four–year college or university, and be a member of Travis Credit Union.

Students who live in Travis Credit Union's 12-county service region and are not yet members may join the credit union and apply for a scholarship at the same time.

Scholarship applications are available at any branch location or online at the credit union's website, at www.traviscu.org. In addition to a completed application, other requirements include a 250-word essay; a certified high school transcript; and a letter of recommendation from a teacher.

Completed applications must be received no later than 5 p.m. March 7.

"In the last 12 years, we have received a tremendous response from young members who have exhibited a commitment to academic excellence and community service," Barry Nelson, the credit union's president and CEO, said in a press release. "We look forward to recognizing even more of our deserving young members this year."

The TCU board of directors established the scholarship program in 2004 and named it the Mary Keith Duff Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of a longtime board member who died in December 2004.

"As a credit union, we are founded on the philosophy of 'people helping people,' and we stand behind the principles that promote human development and social responsibility," added Nelson. "Offering these scholarships is just one way Travis Credit Union adds value for our members and is assisting them with the increasing cost of higher education while reinforcing our commitment to their financial success."

Headquartered in Vacaville, TCU, the 13th largest credit union in California with 177,000 members, is a nonprofit cooperative financial institution serving those who live or work in Yolo, Solano, Napa, Contra Costa, Sonoma, Alameda, Colusa, Merced, Placer, Sacramento, San Joaquin, and Stanislaus counties.
