Thirteen receive Chinese scholarships

Thirteen Dominicans, through the Chinese Government Scholarship program, have received full scholarships to further their education at eleven Chinese universities.

The scholars are prepared to study fields such as Science, Engineering, Medicine, Finance, Management, Psychology, and Business Administration. They received their letters of admission from various Ministers, at a ceremony held at the Fort Young Hotel, on Wednesday.

Recipients Michelle Belle, Kede Edmund, Andrea Francois, Stacy Haris, Rick Hypolite, Leslie Lewis, Shernel Raymond, Acacia Seaman, Deshawn George, and Diandra Jno-Baptiste will pursue Bachelor's degrees, while Shane McIntyre, Yvonette Carbon, and Patrick Henry hope to attain Master's degrees.

Education Minister, Petter Saint Jean, highlighted the importance of education to a country's economic development.

"The development of human resource capacity, through an educated population, is the most important determinant if a country's economic success," he elaborated. "Consequently, we have maintained a strong belief that the economic development of our beloved country is directly linked to the degree of investment in its human resource capacity."

Thus, he stated that the government of the China has made a "profound contribution" to the continued economic success of the Dominica.

He explained that a highly skilled and fully trained population necessary economic prosperity, and to a higher standard of living for Dominicans.

Saint Jean went on to express gratitude to the Ambassador for China's continued commitment to the development of Dominica.

Chinese Ambassador to Dominica, Ambassador Li Jianging, called the opportunity an "adventure" for the students and advised them to be unafraid and open-minded.

"A little apprehension is quite alright, but you will be joined by other students from around the world, including some Dominicans who went before you…you are not alone. Do not be afraid," he urged.

The Chinese Government Scholarship program has awarded scholarships to over 150 Dominicans since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Dominica and the People's Republic of China in 2004.

In 2014, Minister for Youth, Sports, Culture and Constituency Empowerment, Justina Charles revealed that the program had cost the Chinese government $19-million.

Three more Stanford athletes gain post-graduate scholarships

Krista Hardebeck (women's tennis), Conrad Kaminski (men's volleyball) and Simone Jacobs (women's rowing) received NCAA postgraduate scholarships for their outstanding academic and athletic achievements.

They are joined by Jordan Burgess (women's volleyball), BJ Churnside (men's water polo), Aisling Cuffe (women's cross country), Ty Thompson (men's soccer), Gray Umbach (men's swimming) and Justin Brinkley (track and field), who were awarded scholarships in the fall and winter, as Stanford's honorees for 2015-16.

NCAA postgraduate scholarship winners receive a one-time grant of $7,500.To qualify, the student-athletes must be in their final year of eligibility and plan to pursue graduate studies within the next three years. They must also maintain at least a 3.2 grade-point average, have performed with distinction as a member of their varsity team and be nominated by their institution's faculty athletics representative.

The 2016 Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Hardebeck was a double major (Political Science, Psychology) where she finished with a 3.82 cumulative grade-point average.

She was a member of two NCAA championship teams (2013, 2016) during her time on The Farm. The Santa Ana, California, native was a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection, named to the first team in each of the last two seasons after garnering honorable mention status as a sophomore. Earlier this season, Hardebeck was tabbed a CoSIDA Women's At-Large Academic All-District pick.

Voted an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention selection, Hardebeck ranked second on the team in overall victories (27-8) while finishing 21-3 in duals, including a 10-2 record at the No. 4 spot.

Hardebeck, who provided the clinching point in three matches, also produced a career-high 17-match winning streak that spanned nearly two months.

Finishing the season with a No. 123 final singles ranking, she compiled a 12-1 record against conference opponents and was unbeaten in nine Pac-12 dual matches.

Hardebeck opted not to play tennis last summer, as she was completing an internship in Uganda at the Citizen's Coalition for Electoral Democracy in Uganda (CCEDU).

Kaminski was a three-time AVCA All-American, including a first team-selection in 2016. He finished his career as the school record-holder in the rally scoring era (2001-present) in hitting percentage (.462) and blocks per set (1.11).

As a senior, Kaminski led the country with 1.45 blocks per set and was the winner of the Ryan Millar Award, presented to the nation's top middle attacker by Off the Block. The New Berlin, Wisconsin native was a three-time All-MPSF honoree and helped guide the Cardinal to the 2014 national title match.

Kaminski also excelled in the classroom, boasting a 3.58 cumulative grade-point average in mechanical engineering. A three-time MPSF All-Academic Team member, he was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America first team (Men's At-Large) as a senior.

The winner of the Spirit of Stanford Award at the 2016 Stanford Athletics Board Awards, Kaminski served as Cardinal Council treasurer, was a member of the leadership team for Fellowship of Christian Athletes, volunteered for St. Anthony's Catholic Church and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, and was a Kappa Alpha Order member.

He was the Stanford male recipient of the Pac-12 Tom Hansen Conference Medal, awarded annually to an outstanding senior student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.

Jacobs stroked the varsity eight to a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships as a senior, serving in the most important seat in Stanford's top boat.

She guided the Cardinal to a fourth-place finish as a team at the NCAA Championships and a second-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships. A First Team Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Pocock All- American, Jacobs was also a First Team CRCA Scholar-Athlete in 2016.

Jacobs garnered first-team All-Pac-12 honors as a senior, also earning a spot on the conference's all-academic squad.

A science, technology and society major as an undergraduate, she boasted a cumulative grade-point average of 3.70. Jacobs is currently in the middle of a co-term in communications focusing in media studies, taking classes towards her graduate degree.

Hereford Youth Foundation Debuts Scholarship Fund

More than $130,000 in scholarships from the Hereford Youth Foundation of America</ (HYFA) will be awarded this fall to members of the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) to assist in financing their college educations.

Highlighting the scholarship offering is special gift from Jack and Donna Vanier of CK Ranch, Brookville, Kan. The Vanier family, lifetime foundation supporters and Hereford breeders, will award $10,000 Vanier Family Scholarships to 10 Hereford youth who demonstrate a strong work ethic, commitment to higher education and have overcome obstacles in his or her life.

"This is a monumental gift that will make a huge difference in the education of the ten young recipients," says Amy Cowan, director of youth activities and foundation at the American Hereford Association and HYFA. "The Vanier family has a deep commitment to supporting young people in agriculture who have a strong desire to better themselves and the world in which we live in by obtaining a college degree," Cowan adds. "The entire Vanier and CK Ranch family, Jack, Donna, Marty, John and Mary are to be congratulated for making this transformational gift to our Hereford youth."

Another new scholarship that will be awarded for the first time in 2016 is the Perks Ranch Scholarship in the amount of $5,000. Additional scholarships are made possible by the late Bill and Jo Ellard, EE Ranches Inc.; the late Bob and Dolores Call, CBY Polled Herefords; Lloyd Whitehead, Whitehead Ranches; Bob Kube, Fauquier Farms; the Vanier family, CK Ranch; the Blin family; Randy and Kelly Owen; Nancy and Tim Keilty, Edmond F. and Virginia B. Ball Foundation/Cottonwood Springs; Larson Polled Herefords; the late Gary Bishop; and Bar One Ranch, whose scholarship is given in memory of Ken Tracy.

Applications for HYFA scholarships are due Sept. 15. Scholarship applications must be filled out online and National Junior Hereford Association members may access the applications by visiting JrHereford.org. Applicants must be completing their senior year in high school and/or be currently enrolled in a four-year accredited university, junior/community college and/or a technical institution.

Hatfield students honored with scholarships in memory of late officer

HATFIELD TWP. >> Five local students are carrying on a tradition that will keep the memory of a late Hatfield police officer alive for future generations.

They are the latest winners of the Hatfield Police Department's William J. Chapman Memorial Scholarships.

"Officer Chapman was not only an exemplary police officer, but he was also an extraordinary man," said police Detective Sgt. Jay Ciarlello.

Ciarlello is president of the department's Police Benevolent Association, which administers the annual scholarship — and was one of several department officers trained by Chapman, who was an officer for 15 years before his death due to an illness in May 2005.

"Those of us who were fortunate enough to call him a friend remember his kindness, loyalty, his tireless optimism, and his remarkable sense of humor," said police Sgt. Jeff Boyd.

"Those who met him because of his profession remember a sincere and fair officer, whose efforts never strayed from serving our community with dedication and benevolence," he said.

Each year since 2006, the department has presented scholarships to several students who display Chapman's ideals of serving the community, honoring recently graduated high school seniors who plan to continue their studies in public service oriented fields like criminal justice or social work.

Scholarship winners in 2016 include:

Kayla Schulingkamp — Souderton Area High School graduate, who was involved with National Honors Society, Student Advisory Council, Link Crew, served as yearbook editor, and has raised over $200,000 for the Susan J. Komen breast cancer foundation through fundraisers with her dance studio. Schulingkamp has been a dance instructor for children with special needs for three years, and will attend St. Joseph's University to study medicine, according to Ciarlello.

Clare Hill — Lansdale Catholic High School graduate, who ranked second in her graduating class and was President of school National Honors Society, and played varsity cross country, basketball, and track and field. Also volunteered for hundreds of hours at Grandview Hospital and Manna on Main Street, and has spent over 400 hours tutoring younger students in math and science; plans to attend University of Georgia to study chemistry on a premedical track with the goal of becoming a paediatric surgeon.

Julianna Kabakjian — Christopher Dock High School graduate, who was involved in National Honors Society, Chapel Committee, student Senate, led Bible study groups, and tutored. Played on school varsity soccer and track and field teams, and ran a clothing drive that collected 345 pounds of donated clothing for victims of sexual abuse and trafficking; plans to attend Messiah College to study elementary education.

Jaclyn Miller — North Penn High School graduate who was involved in school Key Club and Future Health Occupations club, while also being active with church mission trips to Belize, West Virginia, Lancaster and Philadelphia. Has also spent years involved with local fire company events and fundraisers, and works part time at Brittany Pointe estates; plans to attend East Carolina University to study nursing.

Katie Solomon — North Penn High School graduate, who plans to attend Penn State University to study law.

"While we are very impressed with their scholastic accomplishments, they distinguish themselves through outstanding personal achievements and their commitment to their communities," said Boyd.

Commissioners' President Tom Zipfel congratulated each winner on behalf of the board, and also thanked the department's 27 officers for keeping the 20,000 residents in Hatfield Township and Borough safe.

"Right now, this might be the hardest time in history to be in public safety, especially a police officer, and it's really important — we wanted to show our appreciation," Zipfel said.

"We want to thank you for your service, not only for (awarding the scholarships), but for what you do every single day, which is to serve and protect our residents," he said.

Horatio Alger Association of Canada opens scholarship application process from coast to coast to coast

MONTREAL, Aug. 2, 2016 /CNW Telbec/ - The Horatio Alger Association of Canada announced today the opening of its online scholarship application process for students across Canada beginning their post-secondary studies in the fall of 2017.

A total of 85 need-based scholarships will be awarded:

80 Horatio Alger Canadian Scholarships, valued at $5,000 each, to high school students in every province and territory, as well as CEGEP students in Quebec with plans to attend university, and;

5 Horatio Alger National Entrepreneurial Scholarships, worth $10,000 each, targeted at outstanding applicants nation-wide who intend to pursue a business-related degree or have expressed a commitment to following an entrepreneurial career.

Students are encouraged to file their applications before the October 25, 2016 deadline. The application form can be found on the Horatio Alger Association of Canada's website at http://www.horatioalger.ca.

Horatio Alger scholarships are awarded to deserving students in financial need who have overcome significant adversity while demonstrating strength of character, strong academics, a commitment to pursuing higher education, as well as a desire to contribute to society. Funds can be used for both university or career and technical studies. Since 2012, more than $1.5 million in scholarships have been awarded to more than 300 deserving young Canadians.

Applications invited from minority students

Online applications have been invited from students belonging to minority communities — Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Sikhs, Parsis and Jains — studying in Standards from I to X in government, aided and government-recognised educational institutions for the award of pre-matric scholarships for 2016-17.

A release issued by Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan said that only those students whose parental/guardian's annual income did not exceed Rs.one lakh were eligible for the scholarship.

Besides, the students should have obtained not less than 50 per cent marks in the previous final exams (except for Standard I), and should not have availed themselves of other scholarships during the year. Students should mention their Aadhaar number while filling in the online application.

Students of Standards from I to X can apply online for fresh scholarship or scholarship renewal from www.scholarships.gov.in and upload the scanned required documents.

After submitting the application online, the printout of the filled-in application should be downloaded and submitted to the institution concerned on or before August 31.

The heads of institutions should verify the applications of students and forward the consolidated list to the District Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Officer through online, the release added.

GoodWorks Insurance to Support HBRAWM Scholarship Foundation

GREAT BARRINGTON — Members of the Home Builders & Remodelers Assoc. of Western Massachusetts (HBRAWM) can now automatically support their own educational foundation under a new agreement with GoodWorks Insurance. The insurance agency will donate 20% of its commissions to the Home Builders Foundation of Western Massachusetts on all business and personal insurance policies members buy from it.

The Springfield-based contractors' association has nearly 500 members in Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin, and Berkshire counties. GoodWorks Insurance is an independent insurance agency with offices in Great Barrington and Worcester.

"It's a creative arrangement. Our members will be able to support our foundation without spending an extra cent," said Brad Campbell, executive director of the Home Builders & Remodelers Association of Western Massachusetts. "GoodWorks has shown professionalism and commitment to work with our members."

Just as important are the variety of services and solutions GoodWorks Insurance can offer to association members, he added. "It gives us more top-notch products and services in our holster to offer our members."

Over the years, HBRAWM has provided $500,000 in scholarships and other grants to support the building trades. Besides college scholarships, the foundation offers $500 tool scholarships to vocational-school graduates to help them get started in their careers.
